Transporting substances Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the three methods substances are transported by?
Diffusion, osmosis, and active transport.
How are substances transported by active transport?
Using energy from respiration to move substances against the concentration gradient.
How are substances transported by diffusion?
From an area of high concentration to low concentration without energy.
How are substances transported by osmosis?
Water moves from an area of high water concentration to low water concentration through a partially permeable membrane.
What are the effects of osmosis on cells and tissues?
It can cause cells to swell, shrink, or stay the same size depending on the water balance.
What do you investigate in osmosis in potatoes?
The change in mass when potato cylinders are placed in solutions of different concentrations.
How do you calculate percentage gain or loss of mass in osmosis?
(finalmass−initialmass)÷initialmass × 100.
