A mean old mycin, treat mean old infections (serious, life threatening)

mycin/micin except for THRO - thro it off the mycin list

What are the toxic effects of aminoglycosides?
A
ototoxic (monitor hearing, dizziness, tinitus)
nephrotoxic (monitor eGFR and creatinine)

Route of administration for aminoglycosides
A
IM or IV - never give oral unless you sterilise the bowel - NEO KAN (neomycin, kanamycin)

Why do you draw trough and peak levels?
A
For drug toxicity

When do you draw the trough? When do you draw the peaks
A
5-30 minutes before dose (FOR ALL ROUTES)
Sublingual 5-10 min after
IV start the clock 15-30 min after bag is empty
IM 30-60 min after
