Calcium Channel Blockers
like valium for your heart - negative ino, chrono, dromo
Inotropic, Chronotropic, Dromotropic
Strength of heartbeat. Positive inotropic stimulates the heart, strong heartbeat. Negative relaxes the heart, weak heartbeat.
Rate of heartbeat. Positive = speeds it up Negative = slows
Conductivity. Positive = exciteable, negative = blocks/slows conduction
What do calcium blockers treat? (indication)
AAA - antihypertensive (lower BP), anti-angina (pain they decrease demand for oxygen), anti-arrythmic (take away any ATRIAL arrythmias - NOT ventricle)
Side effects of calcium channel blockers
HHB - headache, hypotension, bradycardia
Names of calcium channel blockers
verapamin, diltiazem (-zem), amlodipine (-dipine)
