anaconda plan
civil war, general winfield scott came up with this, plan to crush south economically by using naval blockade, came up mississippi to split SE and SW, kept south from getting resources needed to prosper

worked in workplace (farms and factories), filled roles that men usually had but they were at war
presidential reconstruction
easier, Abe Lincoln believed South never left union, easy reintegration back into the union
congressional (radical) reconstruction
wanted to punish the south, wanted confederate leaders out of legislation

lincolns VP and becomes pres, impeached for violating 10 year of office act, 1 vote short of conviction
13th amendment

sharecropping
poor whites and freedmen worked on farms owned by plantation owners, basically paid rent, got to keep some crops but most went to land owner, if they couldn’t pay rent they couldn’t leave until money paid back
plains indian wars
inidians getting pushed further west, killed their buffalo to get them to stay on land reservations. Battle of Little Big horn was a victory for NA (w/ custer). Dawes act broke up NA land into sections to assimilate them. Wounded knee massacre was a loss for NA, last battle
laissez- faire
free market system where govt doesn’t control much, capitalism, republican beliefs for got involvement (less is better)
transcontinental railroad
linked sea to shining sea, E to W, $$, govt provided grants (money and subsidies) to speed things up with production
closed shops
labor unuons =, could only hire people in a labor union, closed to others
monopolies
1 company or group of companies control an entire industry, standard oil. sherman antitrust act was passed to break up monopolies, unsuccessful but in 1905 in W securites v. US, act was used to break up a monopoly and cooperations lost
old immigrants
are from W and W Europe, new were from S and E Europe
populism
farmers inspired, grange, farmers alliance, populist party, not very successful but progressives adapted ideals and were successful
triangle shirtwaist factory fire
sweatshop where women worked and doors were chained to prevent women from leaving, fire and women were trapped, anti sweat shop laws were passed to provide workers compensation, called attention to a need and made work safer

made up of middle class women in the cities
nativism
ppl who weren’t happy w/ immigration. wanted to cut off immigration from S and E Europe
