End of 2nd Nine Weeks Test Flashcards
(48 cards)
republican party platform going into civil war
weren’t calling for the abolition of slavery, they were actually calling to stop the expansion, also called for higher tariffs and westward expansion
causes of southern secession/civil war
the election of 1860 bc the republicans get elected, first state to secede= South Carolina and they were the most upset/ Warhawkish about this, they knew that if republicans got elected slavery would be abolished and they didn’t like that
causes of the civil war
slavery (trigger), states rights, 2 different economic systems - North=industrial, South=agricultural
reasons the north fought
preserve the union, not about ending slavery even though it ultimately became about that
advantages/disadvantages for both the North and South
north- more money, industrialized, transportation bc of railroads, shipping, industry, larger population
south- military generals, home field advantage, better leaders, the possibility of British recognition, access to the British navy
total war concept
everyone gets involved, including women and children, everyone can get involved in order to win, sherman march to the Sea
emancipation proclamation follows the Battle of Antietam
B of A was significant because it was where Lee tried to invade the North for the first time, was he successful? no so the North basically wins this and since the north has this victory, Lincoln decides to issue the emancipation proclamation
What did the Emancipation proclomation do? rid all the slaves in the South, all the slaves in the territories in rebellion, did it free all the slaves? no, not the ones in the border states but it gave the north the moral high ground, they’re gonna come down there, preserve the union, and free those slaves in the south
the cause of conscription/draft
rich people could get exempted from the draft, “rich man’s war, poor man’s fight,” led to a lot of controversies in the North, sometimes African Americans in the North were victims of these draft riots
the role of African-American Troops
they fought in a lot of battles for the north (not the south), served in segregated units, typically paid less, they fought well
battle of gettysburg
the last confederate invasion of the north, not successful but was a turning point battle of the east
battle of vicksburg
split the confederacy in half, turning point battle in the West, splits the south (part of the Anaconda plan)
battle of atlanta
allows lincoln to win the election of 1864, atlanta was significant bc it is where the rail lines ran through, conquer atlanta= rip the heart out of the south, once the northerners realized the importance of Atlanta, they knew they were going to win, so they voted Lincon in. Lincoln went against McClellan (democrat) who said if you elect him he will win the war
lincolns second inaugural address
makes this after he is reelected in 1864, gives his plan for the next 4 years, he’s gonna reunite the country, but he gets assasinated
civil war casualties
north lost more men, north had a bigger army, south lost a greater percent of their soldiers, smaller army so each casualty is a bigger percentage
Presidential Reconstruction vs congressional (radical republican) Reconstruction
Pres. Recon- meant to be easier, it’s what Lincoln wanted and his VP, 10 percent plan, reunite the south
Cong. RR Recon.- much more challenging, about revenge, punishment, difficult, pulling South back in, North wanted to make sure the South would never do this again
How do you bring the south back in?
Pres. recon. wanted to be easiest, painless as possible
black codes
called slave codes pre-civiul war, south is defeated, no more slavery (13th amendment), come up with black codes to limit the freedom of freedmen, includes socioeconomic freedom (opportunity to advance economically)
freedmen’s bureau
set up to help the Freedmen, these slaves were now free and don’t know what to do so this helped the transitition
scalawags and carpetbaggers
scalawags- southerners who participated in reconstruction, helped sold out to the North
carpetbaggers- northerners who came up to the south, supposedly came to the south to help out (school teachers) southerners would accuse their southerners to profit to make money off south
13th amendment
ends slavery
14th amendment
guarentees citizenship
15th amendment
can;t restrict voting based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude (slavery)
immediate effects- positive
long term- negative
civil rights act of 1866
declared all people US citizens regardless of race/color, born here= citizen, all citizens get equal protection under the law
why some women’s rights advocates have a problem with the 14th amendment
it didn’t include them, it guaranteed rights for black men, but they were left out, they wanted women to be added but it didn’t work
