Asthma And COPD Flashcards
(17 cards)
Ics - inhaled corticosteroids
Budesonide,fluticosone,beclometasone
LABA- Long acting beta2agonist =
Formoterol,salmeterol
SABA- Short Acting beta 2 agonist
Salbutamol,Terbutaline
LTRA-Leukotriene Receptor antagonist -
Montelukast
ICS/LABA Combinations -
Budesonide/formoterol, Fluticasone/salmeterol
Long acting muscarinic antagonist - LAMA
Tiotropium
COPD is about sputum, asthma is the inflammation.
Which combinations do we see being used in COPD?
SABA+ SAMA
LAMA+LABA
LABA+ICS
COPD ONLY:
- Methylxanthines:theophylline: used less commonly due to side effects but can provide bronchodillation
- Phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors - Roflumilast - reduces the inflammation and may be used for severe COPD which chronic bronchitis
SABA (Example,Indications,Contraindications,cautions,side effects,use)
-Salbutamol
- Quick relief of asthma symptoms
- Severe pre- eclampsia
- arrhythmias, hypokalaemia
-Fine tremors in hands, hypoklaamia, palpitations
- used when needed
LABA (Example,Indications,Contraindications,cautions,side effects,use)
-formoterol, salmeterol,indacterol,vilanterol
- prevents asthma symptom
- severe re- eclampsia
- arrhythmias and hypokalaemia
- fine tremors, hypokalamia and palpitations
- used less commonly regularly
Salbutamol - exam question
Fine tremor!!!
Ics (Example,Indications,Contraindications,cautions,side effects,use)
- Beclomethasone, Budesonide, fluticasone
- Long term asthma control
- Contrainications apply to oral and iv use
- Oral candidiasis, voice alterations - low raspy sound
- rinse mouth after to prevent thrush
SAMA (Example,Indications,Contraindications,cautions,side effects,use)
Ipratropium- quick relief of symptoms in COPD/Asthma
- no contraindications
- Prostativc hyperplasia
- Dry mouth and cough, headache
- Not commonly used in asthma
LAMA (Example,Indications,Contraindications,cautions,side effects,use)
Aclidinium Glycopyrronium, Umeclinidium, Tiotropium
- Maintenance treatment in COPD
- Cystic fibrosis, tiotropium not given in under 6 years
- prostatic hyperplasia caution
- dry mouth, cough and headache
- tiotropium used in asthma and COPD, the rest only licensed for COPD
LTRA (Example,Indications,Contraindications,cautions,side effects,use)
Montelukast
Asthma maintenance therapy
Contra- hypersensitivity
- caution in elderly
Se- abdominal pain, Churg Strauss syndrome, hepatoxicity
TAKE AT NIGHT
Montelukast MHRA
CAN cause neuropsychiatric effects such as sleep disturbance, mood swings and agitations
Xanthine - Theophylline
Asthma and stable COPD
By Brand
- Contra- COPD Exacerbations
- caution in arrhythmia and hypokalaemia
Side effects = nausea and vomitting, palpitations and hypokalaemia
Smokers= higher dose
Theophylline + Beta 2 agonist
Increase hypokalaemia risk
