Spacers Flashcards
(11 cards)
How to use
Shake inhaler
Put inhaler into spacer
Breathe out to make room!!!
Make a seal around mouthpiece of spacer
Press the canister to release dose
Breathing slowly and deeply?
Not hard and fast! Because were using an aresol
Hold breathe for 10 seconds or as long as possible and then breathe out, if you need a second dose wait 30 seconds
If they can’t do it the right way
Just breathe in and out 5 times - slowly
Spacers do what
They remove the need for timing, less coooridination needed
Single breath (breathe once after pressing to release dose)
Can breathe in multiple times
You still need to follow the advice as per using inhaler - rinse mouth after use etc. if using a steroid inhaler with mask then rinse face too
Spacers are only for which types of inhalers?
Only for pMDI - aresols that go into the chamber
Licensing can vary - some are not compatible purely because of licensing
Spacers are useful for
Poor inhalation technique
Children
High doses of inhaler corticosteroids
Nocturnal Asthma
Patient at risk of candidiasis with inhaled corticosteroid
Aerochamber plus
0-18 months - with mask = infants
1-5 - with mask = child
Blue ( 5 and above) - can get with and without mask
Plus FLOW- VU
Has a flap -breath moves the flap so easier to count and its also dishwasher safe in compression to other spacer
Cleaning
Once a month
How do we clean
Mild detergent, rinse ,air dry and no towels
No don’t want static - static = changes the way the aerosol reacts in the chamber and not let us breathe it in
Volumatic spacer
More effective - bigger chamber = more space and time but patients hate the size = less adherence (more space, more time doing down the chamber and entering the lungs)
