Atoms Flashcards
(19 cards)
Protons
These have a positive charge and are located in the nucleus of an atom
Neutrons
These have a neutral charge meaning they don’t have charge and are located in the nucleus of an atom
Electrons
These have a negative charge and orbit around the nucleus of an atom
What is the overall charge in an atom?
Because there is the same amount of protons and electrons in an atom the over all charge is 0
Where is the mass of an atom found
In the nucleus with protons and neutrons
How can compounds be separated
By chemical reactions
How can mixtures be separated
By separation techniques
Group
They are columns in the periodic table. There are 8 of them and represent the number of electrons in the outer shell
Periods
They are rows in the periodic table. There are 7 and represent how many shells an atom has.
How do you work out how many protons there are in an element?
The atomic number
How do you work out how many electrons there are in an element?
Atomic number
How do you work out how many neutrons there are in an element?
Atomic mass - atomic number
Why do compounds have specific chemical formulas
A chemical formula shows the exact number of each type of atom in a compound. It is important because the properties of a compound depend on the exact ratio of its elements
