Types Of Orbits Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
Geostationary orbit
A
A satellite in GEO will remain above the same location on earth for its entire orbit. Their most common use is telecommunications.
2
Q
Low earth orbit
A
A satellite in LEO is in a orbit that is relatively close to earth’s surface. These satellites do not stay above the same location on earth and they do not follow the same path
3
Q
Medium earth orbit
A
Medium earth orbit comprises a wide range of orbits anywhere between LEO and GEO. Satellites in MEO also do not follow the same path.
4
Q
Polar orbit
A
Satellites in polar orbit travel from north to south passing roughly through earth’s poles.
