Classification Flashcards
(25 cards)
Classification
He process of organising living things into groups based on their similarities and differences
Kingdom
The largest group in biological classification: it includes all living things, divided into 5 main groups
Class
A group within a phylum that has even more similarities
Order
A smaller group within a class that groups organisms with even more similarities
Family
A group within an order that is more specific
Genus
A group within a family that includes organisms that are very closely related. The genus is the first part of an organism’s scientific name
Species
The most specific level of classification, organisms in this group can breed together to produce fertile offsprings. The species is the second part of an organisms scientific name.
Binomial nomenclature
The system of naming organisms with 2 Latin names: the genus and the species .
Taxonomy
The science of classifying living things
Producer
An organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis
Consumer
An organisms that eats other organisms for energy
Decomposer
An organism such as bacteria that break down dead material returning the nutrients to the soil
Herbivore
a consumer that only eats plants
Carnivore
A consumer that only eats other animals
Omnivore
A consumer that eats both animals and plants
Food chain
A simple model that shows how energy flows through and ecosystems, from producers to consumers
Food web
A complex model showing how multiple food chain are connected in an ecosystem, showing the inter
Ecosystem
A community of living organisms interacting with each other and their environment
Dichotomous key
A tool that helps identify organisms by answering a series of questions with yes or no answers
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants and other organisms make food using sunlight, carbon dioxide and water
Mutualisms
A relationship between 2 species where both benefit each other. For example bees and flowers, bees get nectar and flowers get pollinated
Interdependence
The relationship between organisms that rely on each other for food shelter and other resources in an ecosystem
Predator
An animal that hunts, kills and eats other animals for food
Prey
An animal that is hunted and eaten by a predator
