Atoms And Elements Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is an element?
A substance that be split into anything simpler by chemical reactions.
What are atoms?
The smallest particles of an element.
Atoms of one element are the same but different from atoms of other elements.
Explain the periodic table?
There are over 100 elements.
All elements are shown with their own symbol.
Each symbol is 1 or 2 letters e.g. Copper Cu, gold Au, carbon C
What does properties mean?
The properties of a substance are how we describe or measure it.
Metals and non - metals have different properties.
What are common properties of metals?
Conduct heat and electric well. Shiny High melting point Left side of periodic table. 3 metals are magnetic. Can burn to form alkaline oxide. Flexible
What are the properties of non - metals?
Conduct heat and electric poorly. Dull Mostly are solids or gas. Right side of periodic table. Not magnetic Can burn to make acidic oxides. Brittle
What are compounds?
Elements can join together to make compounds.
The compound name tells you the elements in it.
Compounds of two elements end in ‘-ide’ e.g. Carbon dioxide.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is the smallest particle of many compounds.
Molecules are made up of atoms.
Some elements are made of molecules. E.g. Oxygen is two oxygen atoms joined together O2.
What does the chemical formula tell you?
The chemical formula tells you how many atoms of each element are in a compound.
A compound has always got the same elements in the same ratio.
How do compounds differ from the elements in them?
The properties of a compound are different from the elements that make it up.
Hydrogen is an explosive gas, oxygen fuels a fire. Together the make water.
