What is a magnet?
A non contact force. They attract magnetic material, e.g. Iron, nickel, cobalt.
Mixtures like steel they include a magnetic material also attract.
How do you make a magnet?
Using iron or steel.
2 ends of a bar magnet are called north seeking and south seeking poles.
North and south poles attract each other. Same poles repel each other
The space around a magnet where it has an effect is called magnetic field.

Use iron filings or a plotting compass.

A compass is a small magnet that points north.

Magnets can help recycling. Iron cans are separated from aluminium because only iron is magnetic.

A wire with electricity flowing has a magnetic field.
Electromagnet is a coil of wire with electric current flowing through it.
How do you make a electromagnet stronger?
- Increase number of wire coils.
- Increase size of current by increasing voltage.
- Using an iron core.
What are electromagnets used for?
They are used for lifting things.
They are used in electric bells.
They are used in video and music recordings.
What is a relay?
Any switch worked by electricity.
Relays make switches safer e.g. Starter motor in a car uses high current and the relay means the driver doesn’t touch the circuit.
What is a reed switch?
It has two pieces of iron which touch each other if a magnet is near or an electromagnet is used.
