What are the main nutrients the body needs?
Carbohydrates for respiration to release energy
Proteins for growth and repair
Fats to store energy
Vitamins and minerals to keep the body healthy
Fibre for health, keeps intestines clean and stops constipation
Water for health, important solvent in the body
Example of fats
Butter
Cheese
Example of protein
Ham, fish, eggs, beans

Vitamins: Fruit and veg - oranges have much vitamin C
Minerals: calcium, fruit, vegetables, dairy products e.g. Milk

What is fibre
Fibre is made of plant cell walls.
It helps keep our intestines clean and healthy.
Whole meal bread is a good source of fibre.
What does diet mean
It means what you eat.
What does our body mostly consist of
65% water. Water dissolves things so they can be carried around the body and also fills cells to keep their shape and keep you cool when you sweat.
What is the test for starch
Starch is a carbohydrate.
Add 2 drops of iodine solution to a food sample. It turns blue or black if starch present
What is a test for protein
Place food sample in a test tube and add Biuret solution. Protein turns it purple.
What is a test for fat
Rub small dry food sample on white paper. Hold paper up to light and fat leaves a greasy mark.
Why do you need a balanced diet
Ensuring we get nutrients from all food groups.
Not one food contains all substances required. A balanced diet is a variety of food giving you all the substances your body needs
Name examples of starch
Pasta, bread, rice, potatoes
What are sugars found in
Many foods including sweets and cakes
Where do we find nutrition information?
Labels on food tell us
- what the food contains
- How much chemical energy is stored
- The amount of energy is measured in kilojoules (kj)
What happens if we eat too much of one type of,food or nutrient?
The diet is not balanced and health problems can occur.
Too much fat may cause heart disease.
