Ecological Relationships Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a habitat?
A habitat is the area where an organism lives. The better an organism is adapted to its habitat the better its chance of survival.
What are physical environment factors in a habitat
Non living factors in a habitat such as how light it is and what the temperature is. These are the surroundings or environment of an organism.
What are micro habitats?
Small areas in the habitat such as the fur on a fox
What is a community
All the plants and animals Ina habitat make up a community.
The total number of species in a community is a population
What do organisms need to survive in a habitat
Resources.
Animals need food, water, oxygen, shelter and a mate.
Plants need water, carbon dioxide and light to make food. Also they need oxygen, mineral salts and space to grow.
What are adaptations?
Organisms in a habitat must adapt to survive the environment conditions of the habitat. Members of the same community may have similar adaptations to cope with the problems of the habitat. For example plants and animals adapt differently if their habitat is a fast flowing river or if it is a pond
What is a distribution?
All the places in an environment where an organism is found e.g. In a pond, skaters are found on the surface adapted by bristles on their legs so they don’t break the water surface.
