When do you perform the secondary survey?
When the casualty is:
- conscious
- unconscious but breathing normally
What do you do when someone is unconscious and breathing normally?
Place in recovery position
How do you adapt the recover position for a pregnant
women?
Lay on left hand side
How do you assess levels of consciousness?
AVPU
What does AVPU stand for?
Alert
Voice responsive
Pain responsive
Unresponsive
What is the normal heart rate?
60-100 bmp
How do you measure someone’s pulse? And for how long?
Using the radial (wrist) pulse, for 60 seconds
What is the normal breathing rate?
12-16 breaths per min
What is classified as a successful breath?
A rise and fall of the chest
What is the normal body temp?
37 degrees
What temp is considered a fever?
38+
What temp is considered hypothermia?
less than 35
How can you measure someones body temp?
Using the forehead thermometer in the M2
What are signs?
Something you can SEE on the casualty
What are symptoms?
Something the casualty TELLS you they feel
What is the MAPR?
Medical Action Plan Record
What is hypoxia?
Lack of oxygen in the blood
Where will you find the MAPR?
In any medical kit or the a/c library
What is the MAPR used for?
To document PAX details, signs, symptoms, care and medication given etc. (info transferred to CSR)
When administering medication what guidelines should you adhere to?
1) Medication must never be removed from the a/c
2) Never uplift medication down route
3) Never give out your own medicine
4) CC should not assist PAX in administering medication (unless in an emergency)
What must you do before administering medication to under 16s?
- Gain consent from parents beforehand
- Gain consent from MedLink for any M5 medication
What must you do before administering medication to under 16s travelling alone?
Gain consent from MedLink
What should you do/ask before administering medication?
Ask the PAX:
- if they have any allergies
- if they’ve taken any medication in the last 24hrs
Check:
- expiry date and dosage
- precautions and warnings
What medications must you be advised by a HCP or MedLink to administer?
Temgesic
Ativan
Glucogel
