B 5.1 Adaptations Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is an adaptation?
A feature that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment.
What are the three main types of adaptations?
Structural, behavioural, and functional adaptations.
What is a structural adaptation?
A physical feature of an organism’s body that helps it survive (e.g., thick fur or sharp teeth).
What is a behavioural adaptation?
Actions or patterns of activity that help an organism survive (e.g., migration or nocturnal activity).
What is a functional (physiological) adaptation?
Internal body processes that help survival (e.g., conserving water or lowering metabolism during hibernation).
Give an example of a structural adaptation in a polar bear.
White fur for camouflage and thick blubber for insulation in cold environments.
Give an example of a behavioural adaptation in birds.
Migration to warmer climates during winter.
Give an example of a functional adaptation in a desert animal.
Producing concentrated urine to reduce water loss.
What is an extremophile?
An organism adapted to live in extreme conditions (e.g., high heat, pressure, or acidity).
Why are adaptations important for survival?
They help organisms cope with environmental challenges, increasing their chances of survival and reproduction.
