B-Vitamins Flashcards
(47 cards)
Thiamin
first to be identified
Co-enzyme TPP
What are the functions of thiamin?
- metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids (TPP)
- normal function of nervous system
What is the thiamin deficiency?
Beriberi
Dry Beriberi
symptoms related to nervous system and muscular system
Wet beriberi
nervous system and cardiovascular system affected
Infantile beriberi
breast milk contains insufficient thiamin
heart problems, convulsions, death
Sources of thiamin
sunflower seeds
total cereal
ham
grains
Riboflavin
bright yellow pigment
exposure to light causes rapid breakdown
What shouldn’t you package riboflavin in?
glass
Functions of riboflavin
- 2 coenzymes (FMN, FAD)
- helps form other b-vits
- antioxidant
Sources of riboflavin
beef liver
plain yogurt
cheerios
Riboflavin deficiencies
ariboflavinosis
sore throat
scaly, oily skin
sensitive eyes, smooth, painful tongue
Riboflavin toxicities
yellow color to urine
Choline
- technically not vitamin
- found in cell membranes
Functions of choline
- component of phospholipids
- precursor for acetylcholine
- helps export VLDL from liver
Choline deficiency
muscle and liver damage
Choline toxicity
only from supplementation
-fishy body odor, low blood pressure, vomiting, salivation, sweating, GI tract effects
Sources of choline
eggs
cod
chicken
cottage cheese
Niacin
- exists as nicotinic acid and nicotinamide
- both used to synthesize niacin coenzymes (NAD and NADP)
Niacin functions
- coenzymes participate in REDOX
- required for metabolism of all macros
Niacin deficiency
- pellagra
- symptoms include Dermatitis, Diarrhea, Dementia, death
Niacin sources
chicken product 19 wheat bran tuna halibut salmon
Biotin
-coenzymes for carboxylase enzymes
Biotin functions
- metabolism of carbs, fats, and proteins
- binds to proteins that help DNA fold in cell nucleus
- maintains gene stability
