A
1 duke of guise would invade England, murder Elizabeth + put Mary QS on the throne, T
2 Anthony Babington, a catholic wrote to Mary in 1586 about the conspiracy
3 sir Francis walsingnam intercepted and read Babington’s letters to nary, demonstrating herawareness and support of conspiracy
4 Abington and the plotters sentenced to death and hanged, drawn and quartered
5 In October 1586, Mary was sentencedto death for her part in the plotelizabeth delayed but signed many’s death warrant in Feb 1587. Many was beheaded shortly after.

why was the babington plan significant
A
- Elizabeth’s position in thissituation was more precarious thanother plots
- by 1585, England + Spain were virtually at war
- Eliz’s gov. Became determined to crush thecatholic threat
- persecution of Catholics intensified.in 1585,11,000 Catholics were imprisoned ar placed under house avest. 31 priests were executed in 1586
- the plot led to the execution of MQS, ending hope of replacing Liz with a Catholic heir
