what were problems that english merchants faced in developping trade
- spain contolled the netherlands and englands main route into european markets. antwerp was particularly important to english trade in the N
- spain controlled much of the new world where there werre valuable, new trading opportunities. ( anyone who wanted to trade there needed a licence from spain, whihc were hard to come by)
- as a rsult, many english merchants ignored spains rules and traded illegally w out licences, some even attacking spanish ports and shipping.

what was significant about his circumnavigation
hes was 1st english man and 2nd person in history.
he set off w 5 ships and only had one left - the Golden Hind - by the time he reached the Pacific Ocean.
what was the outcome of drake’s voyage?
- once in the pacific, drake successfully plundered spanish prots and ships along the coastline of Chile and Peru.
- he also claimed a region of north Califronia in E’s name, calling it New Albiun,
- it is estimated that when drake returned to england in 1580, he brought 400,000 pounds of spanish treasure with him
this brought a great sum to the english crown
-elizabethn was so impressed by his achievements tha she knighted Drake on the deck of the Golden Hind in 1581
- outraged phillip as he saw drake as a pirate
what wss the significance of drake’s actions
- his claims to land in north California ( NewAlbion ) made it clear that england did not accept spains domination of the americas
- only one other sailor had successfully circumnavigated the globe, so drakes success gave england a national hero and said something about endlands strength as a seafaring nation.
- drake boosted the crowns finances at a time of growing concern over spains threat to england
- elizabeths public knighting of drake also sent a strong message of defiance to spain
