why was this plot significant?

A

-reinforced the catholic threat (and by MQS)

  • reinforced the spanish threat, especially as the persecution of protestants under alba in the netherlands was increasinng. so anxietry ab spains intentions towards towards E increased
  • it led e to seek improved relkations with france

what happened as a result? ( reaction from government agents)

A

smuggle catholic priests into england

this led to government agents increasingly keeping english catholics udner surveillance.
homes where priests were suspected to be staying were raided

any priests caught risked being hanged, drawn and quartered, althought not all were

as a result, secret hiding places called priest holes were made.

-passed 2 laws against catholics

  • recusants would now be fined £20 (this would bankrupt most families)
  • attempting to convert people to catholicism was now treason
