Behavioral Patterns Flashcards
(17 cards)
Research on canine behavior fall into one of two scientific disciplines, what are they?
Behavioral psychology
Ethnology
What is behavioral psychology?
In behavioral psychology, emphasis is placed on the dog’s learning process and sensory capabilities. Their findings are based on what a dog does rather than trying to explain why a dog exhibits a specific behavior.
(Think people in the lab coats, scientific)
What is ethnology?
Ethnology studies inherited behavioral patterns and the relationship between function and behavior in the natural setting. The ethnologist believes and adheres to the theory that behavioral traits are evolutionary, and that behavior is adaptive.
(People “doing it”)
What is working dog character theory?
This is not based on scientific facts; it is based on the consensus of highly knowledgeable and accomplished working dog trainers. These theories, often parallel, the findings made by the ethnologist and, in certain instances the behavioral psychologist.
(Make what the dog is doing, work on their behalf)
What is a fear biter
A dog that becomes fearfully aggressive towards strangers. This occurs when the dog is so afraid that it bites because of its fear.
What is avoidance behavior?
Avoidance behavior or withdrawal reflex is exhibiting when both physical and psychological pain is induced
What is ingestive behavior?
It is initiated from within the dog. Usually, and training, ingestive behavior only comes into play when food or its odor is used as a reward or motivator.
What is a shelter seeker?
This is the behavior pattern of seeking the optimum environmental conditions in which to live. This usually is indicative a very poor socialization to humans or strange environments.
(Usually also seen with avoidance behavior)
What behavior patterns will the dog be showing signs of during fighting?
Chasing
Biting
Threatening
Killing
What behavior patterns will the dog be showing signs of during preying?
Chasing
Biting
Scenting
Killing
Carrying
What behavior patterns will a dog be showing signs of during avoidance?
Flight
Passive defense reflex
What behavior patterns will the dog be showing signs of during submission?
Inhibition
Pacification
What is care giving behavior?
This is the natural consequence of sexual behavior. It is first exhibited at the onset of the birth of the first puppy and will continue for several weeks.
What is care soliciting behavior?
Attempting to attract attention so that their needs will be provided for. Whining, yelping, and even mewing sounds exhibit this
What is eliminative behavior?
Adult dogs will urinate and deposit feces to mark their established domain areas and eliminate waste
What is allelomimetic behavior?
This would imply that two or more dogs are doing something with mutual stimulation in coordination.
(think, monkey see, monkey do but with dogs)
What is investigative behavior?
“Checking out” their environment
