Q

Are you a problem-solver?

A

Yes, am a natural problem-solver and use my creativity and drive to find a solution to problems.

S: During one summer, did not manage to find any work or internships and wanted to gain some exposure to a more commercial environment than my previous work experiences. Returned to SG because of this, which was discouraging, and could not find any work. However, heard from a friend about Suppr, which was an app being developed by a mutual friend. Took this as an opportunity - they were looking for a third member of the team to help w/ marketing and other ad-hoc responsibilities eg presentations, helping creating a smoother UI

T: Reached out to this person and established a connection. Even though I had no experience in marketing previously to this, I took on this problem of how to reach our target market and come up with a plan for social media etc. Wanted to increase engagement and popularity of the app before the launch. Target - 21-30 young professionals, foodies who wanted to meet and connect with others. Similar to other dating apps but needed to establish ourselves as distinct

A: analysed target market and initiated market research and segmentation.
Increased social media presence
Provided tools to increase popularity
Got review in a university newspaper in the US
Through experimentation and private research in downtime came up with a solution to this market research question and problem

R: app then launched in August 2015
Learned about learning on the job about start-up management and marketing
Problem-solving entailed experimentation and collaboration - working with small group
Successfully found partners.

Q

What is the most valuable feedback you have received and how did you act on it?

A

S: Was told to be able to take negative criticism better during one of my first working experiences as a teacher.

T: Had a particularly hard session and one of the main teachers gave me his critiques of my way of controlling the classroom, and I felt quite down on it. Told me that I didn’t have many activities planned for the kids, who were 4-5 years old. Told me to engage the kids with tools and resources and plan way more ahead. But he told me to never take criticism badly; chance to grow and improve rather than sulk

A: Took this opportunity to plan ahead and adjust teaching style to suit the audience. Was a big learning point for me, and made me realise that there are many ways to reach a goal and pushed me to be more creative in a new environment for me. Took this advice throughout my professional and academic life; how can I do better?

R: Now I feel that if I fail, I must fail fast - making steps forward regardless, and always looking for what could be better. Take every opportunity to learn and grow
