What was Belfast Agenda intention?
Establish Belfast on a sus dev framework
‘Making necessary decisions to realise our vision of economic growth, max wellbeing and protect env, without affecting ability future generations to do the same’
Commitment to make sure economic success is not constrained by issues related to energy, transport and city water infrastructure
Waste Management
Any plan for future - ensure city can meet all recycling and landfill obligations
Belfast City Council join with 5 other council areas to form - arc21 - control and manage waste in a sus manner
Adoption of Revised Waste Framework Directive (WFD)
2008, move toward a more recycling society
•achieve recycling rate 50% household waste by 2020
•achieve recovery rate of 70% for all non-hazardous waste by 2020
What has BCC invested money into for waste management
Kerbside bind that are collected regularly - into whoch seperate waste
2013-14 BCC collected 146,000 tonnes waste - able to recycle 36%
Energy Consumption
Manage energy use across city more effectively, invest in renewable sources of energy and tackle fuel poverty
Contribution of RE in NI reached 25% in 2016
-wind power - 91%
-landfill gas - 4%
-biomass - 1%
-biogas - 1%

Water Supply
NI water - water and sewerage services - 655,000 households & 85,000 non households
Sewerage ntwrk in Belfast built in Victorian Times - suffering due to sustained underinvestment
NI water undertook £160 million storm water management project - Belfast Sewers Project from 2006-2010
•reduce risk of flooding - improve water quality in Lagan and Blackstaff
Where was water transported to Belfast from
Mournes area - Belfast Water Act 1893
Water intakes constructed on Kilkeel and Annalong Rivers - pipes and tunnels constructed to move water up to Belfast
2nd stage dev 1923 - Silent Valley reservoir constructed - quench demand for incr water supply
More recently - £90 million imprvmnts put in place 2014 - lay new water mains throughat NI
-over 65km pipes laid through Belfast - quality reliability and security of local water supply was maintained
