Transport links still limited
Take some time and a number of connections to travel one side city to another
Operating times can be inconvenient or unsociable hours
Often PT overcrowded - difficult for travellers
Integrated Transport Networks
Adopted since 1960s
68% trips in city now made by trams
Increasingly integrated - cycle racks been built at railway and tram stations - incr seamless transfer from one mode to another
Some people join car sharing clubs - book access to a car when need make big purchases or travel outside city
Over 70% residents in city live near a tram stop
Pedestrian
Large pedestrian zone in centre of city - no cars allowed
Only way into heart city - bicycles or public transport
Much less air pollution- people enjoy being outdoors more
Growth in no. cafés and restaurant - ppl sit outside - city look and feel better
Shops and services built together in diff nbhds - shopping and medical services are located close each other and can be visited on foot

1982 - 1999 % of bikes used as main mode tp rose 15 - 27%
Over 400 miles cycle track across city
-bike priority on roads and traffic lights
Safe biker storage locations - over 6000 bike parking slots

Restrictions on Car Usage
use in decline
many areas totally car-free
areas of free parking have been removed - replaced with extremely high car parking charges
Vauban area have to agree to never own a car
17,500 a year to local council to park in a solar garage at edge of city
proportion car journeys fell from 38% 1982 to 26% 2009
people discouraged from buying a car - less flexible, especially for longer trips
Fewer C emissions - 35% reduction over last 10yrs
When Vehicles Required
many shops & offices still req vans and lorries to deliver materials
meant to happen early morning and late evenings - can put more pressure on city centre workforce
Some jobs still rq cars and restrictions can cause problems trying to get around city
Reality, car ownership still quite high around city - local people not always in favour of restriction on their choices
Harsh restrictions put some people off coming to live and work in city
