Biochemistry Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is the difference between serum and plasma?
Plasma contains clotting factors e.g. fibrinogen. Serum doesn’t
Should you use Serum or Plasma for biochem?
Serum - clotting factors can interfere
What should you use for biochem in birds and reptiles?
Heparinised plasma - small samples.
How do you collect serum?
brown or red top tube, allow to clot, take supernatent, put in serum tube, spin, store in fridge
How do you collect plasma?
EDTA, citrate or heparin tube, centrifuge.
What are the 2 ways you can measure TP?
refractometer, calorimetric
Will TP by higher on a serum sample or plasma? Why?
Plasma, contains fibrinogen
What 3 things falsely increase TP?
Icterus, severe haemolysis, lipaemia,
3 reasons for increased TP
dehydration, inflammation, neoplasia
3 reasons for decreased TP
dilution, loss (PLN, PLE, haemorrhage), decreased production
What is the method used to measure albumin
dye binding method
How should you measure albumin in birds?
electrophoresis
Why might albumin be increased?
dehydration
Why might albumin be decreased?
Loss (renal, GI, haemorrhage), decreased production (liver), third spacing (effusions)
Why might you get a) polyclonal globulin increase b) monoclonal globulin increase?
a) inflammation
b) neoplasia e.g. plasma cell tumour
What 2 parameters might tell us about the pancreas?
Amylase, Lipase
In what species would you expect elevations in amylase and lipase with pancreatitis?
dogs, not cats.
What causes increased pancreatic enzyme increases other than pancreatitis?
renal insufficiency
If there is azomtaemia and the kidneys are concentrating appropriately what should the USG be in a) cat b) dog c) horse
a) 1.035
b) 1.030
c) 1.025
Is urea useful in ruminants?
No look at creatinine
What is the main ion in the ECF?
Sodium
Sodium levels are regulated by the _____
kidney
3 causes of increased sodium
increased intake, increased water loss, decreased water intake
Decreased sodium may be due to..
decreased intake, increased loss (e.g. kidneys)
