Biodiversity Flashcards
(14 cards)
Define biodiversity
referring to the richness and abundance of ecosystems, species and genetics
Define ecosystems relationship to biodiversity
the variety and extent of healthy, unique ecosystems is ESSENTIAL for the survival of the planet
Define ecosytems
a physical habitat and community made of both biotic and abiotic factors
Define symbiosis
biotic creatures that are aligned together/live together for long periods
Define how species relate to biodiversity
In a healthy biodiverse environment there is a variety and abundance of different species in the ecosystem
Define how genetics relate to biodiversity
the variety of allels (variations on genes) can impact the biodiversity - for example, cheetahs are almost completely genetically identical, so if a disease came along it would wipe most of them out. However, having other species breaking up this population could slow the impact
What are the three domains of life?
Archaea, bacteria and eukarya
Define archaea
(prokaryotic) extreme environments, chemical differences in cell wall/membrane, slight difference in flagella
Define bacteria
(prokaryotic) can remain dormant for years, common (found everywhere)
Give another name for eukarya
Eukaryotic
What two domains of life are under prokaryotes?
Bacteria and archaea
What kingdoms are under the domain of eukarya?
protista (most are tiny, unicellular organisms), plantae (plants), fungi, and animalia (animals)
What kingdom is under bacteria?
Eubacteria - no nucleus, and can be found everywhere
What kingdom is under archaea?
Archaebacteria - no nucleus, and possess some genes (are more closely related to eukaryotes than eubacteria)
