Ecosystem Changes (natural and unnatural) Flashcards
(9 cards)
Define primary succession
When an ecosystem is developed over hundreds and hundreds of years from bare rock gradually growing
Define secondary succession
when an ecosystems starts with soil (something was there before, but due to a natural or unnatural event, that previous ecosystem was destroyed)
What are the three main areas of PRIMARY succession (in order)?
Pioneer species, intermediate species and climax community
What are the three main areas of SECONDARY succession (in order)?
(same as the primary succession) pioneer species, intermediate species and climax community
Give THREE examples of primary succession (doesn’t have to be specific)
volcano eruption, glacier outbursts, nuclear explosions (or was just bare in the first place)
Give THREE examples of secondary succession (doesn’t have to be specific)
After a fire, harvesting (too much), deforesting, abandonment of land, renewal after disease or outbreak
What is soil development?
When plants break down over time and gradually add more soil to the ecosystem (use in both primary and secondary succession)
Why do shade intolerant trees grow first before the climax species (bigger trees)?
Because the smaller plants have more access to sunlight when they don’t have the larger trees blocking it out, giving the community a chance to thrive
Give the five examples of unnatural change (human impact)
overharvesting of plants and animals, artificially produces species, destruction of habitat, isolation and fragmentation and pollucion
