Bioenergetics Flashcards
(19 cards)
Since photosynthesis takes in energy, what type of reaction is it?
Endothermic reaction
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In leaves of the plant.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water —light(chlorophyll)—> glucose + oxygen
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
CO2 + H20 ——> C6H12O6 + O2
What does it tell us if we increase the light intensity and the rate of photosynthesis increases?
The light intensity was a limiting factor
If we increase the light intensity until the rate of photosynthesis levels off, what is the new limiting factor?
Carbon dioxide
What are some limiting factors for rate of photosynthesis?
Amount of chlorophyll in the leaves
Light level
Carbon dioxide level
How does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Activity rises with temp until enzymes denature
How is the glucose produced via photosynthesis used?
Release energy via respiration
Convert to starch to be used for energy when there is no light
Convert to fats and oils
Produce cellulose
Produce animo acids
What else do plants need to amke amino acids from glucose?
Nitrate ions absorbed from the soil
How do greenhouses increase the rate of photosynthesis?
Greenhouses can be lit and heated, as well as have extra carbon dioxide supplied - increasing the rate of photosynthesis
The extra cost must be justified by the increase in yield.
What type of reaction is respiration?
Exothermic (releases energy)
What is the world equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen ——> carbon dioxide + water
——> energy
How much energy does aerobic respiration release? Why?
A high amount, since the glucose has been fully oxidised
When there is a shortage of oxygen, muscle cells respire _____.
Anaerobically
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in the body?
glucose ——> lactic acid
——> energy
How much energy does anaerobic respiration release compared to aerobic? Why?
Much less, because the oxidation of glucose is incomplete.
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plant and yeast cells?
glucose ——> ethanol + carbon dioxide
——> energy
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells called? What does it do?
Fermentation, produces ethanol
CO2 causes bubbles in dough, causing bread to rise.
