biological molecules Flashcards
(5 cards)
what are Carbohydrates made up of?
they contain elements such as carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
what are complex Carbohydrates made of?
starch and glycogen are large, and are made up of many smaller units (e.g. glucose or maltose molecules) joined together in long-chain
what are proteins made up of? and what do they contain?
long chains of amino acids
they all contain Carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen atoms
what are lipids made up of? and what do they contain?
fatty acids and glycerol
lipids contain Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms
how do you prefer a food sample?
get a piece of food and break it up using a pestle and motor.
transfer the ground-up food to a breaker and add some distilled water
give the mixture a good stir with a glass rod to dissolve some of the food
filter the solution using a funnel lined with filter people to get rid of the solid bits of food.
