Excretion - the Kidneys Flashcards
(8 cards)
what are the 3 main roles of the kidneys?
removal of urea from the blood. urea is produced in the liver from excess amino acids
adjustments of ion ( salt) levels in blood
adjustment of water content in blood
How do the Kidneys fulfil their 3 main roles?
filtering stuff out of the blood under high pressure, and then reabsorbing the useful things. the end product is urine.
label the Urinary system?
describe Ultrafiltration?
as filtrate flows along the nephron, useful substances are selectively reabsorbed back into the blood, name them and where they are reabsorbed?
all glucose is reabsorbed from the proximal convolted tubule so that it can be used in respiration. (active transport)
sufficient ions are reabsorbed, excess arent
sufficient water is reabsorbed from a collecting duct into the bloodstream by osmosis.
what are the three main ways water is lost from the kidneys?
sweating, breathing, weeing
define osmoreregulation?
the balance of water coming in and water going out.
How does ADH control water content?
