Movement of subtances in and out of cells Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is diffusion
the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
what is osmosis
the net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower concentration.
describe a diffusion Experiment
you can now investigate the rate of diffusion by using different-sized cubes of agar jelly, seeing how long it takes for each cube to go colourless
describe a living Osmosis Experiment
describe a non living Osmosis experiment
What is active transport
movement of particles against the concentration gradient, using energy released during respiration.
How do you calculate SA: V
how does distance affect the movement of substances?
if substances have a short distance to move, then they’ll move in and out of cells faster.
how does temperature affect the movement of cells?
as the particles in a substance get warmer they have more energy - so they move faster. this means as temperature increases, substances move in and out of cells faster.
how does the concentration gradient affect the movement in and out of cells.
the bigger the concentration gap the faster diffusion/osmosis
