(15 cards)
Biomedical therapies
Changing the brain’s functioning by using prescribed drugs, electrical stimulation, magnetic impulses, or psychosurgery
Pre-drug therapy
Prior to the discovery of psychological drugs, hospitals had few options with which to treat patients; early drugs were considered cruel
Psychopharmacology
Study of drug effects on the mind and behavior
Deinstitutionalization
With the discovery of effective drug treatments, patients were able to leave the institutions
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
Classification of antidepressants which work by blocking the reuptake of serotonin after it has been released
Insulin therapy
Depressed and schizophrenic patients were given an overdos of insulin to cause a convulsion; was replaced by electroconvulsive therapy
Electroconvulsive therapy
Very effective for the quick relief of symptoms of severe depression
Transcranial direct current stimulation
A weak current applied to the scalp
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation
Repeated magnetic pulses stimulate areas of the brain
Deep brain stimulation
The electrode between the frontal lobe and the limbic system
Lobotomy
Nerves connecting the frontal lobes of the brain to the deeper emotional centers are cut
Hypnosis
A social interaction in which one person makes suggestions about perceptions, feelings, thoughts, or behaviors, and another person follows those suggestions
Hypnotic induction
The process by which a hypnotist creates a state of hypnosis in a subject
Social influence theory
Powerful social influences produce a state of hypnosis
Divided consciousness theory
Hypnosis is a special state of mind
