Early views of mental illness
Explained through a supernatural model, the person was possessed or a sinner; treatments were inhumane
Philippe Pinel
A French physician who said mental illness was a sickness of the mind and should be viewed medically as having physical causes, formed the medical model
The medical model
Mental illnesses (psychopathology) have physical causes that can be diagnosed, treated, and, in most cases, cured
Diathesis-Stress model
Genetic predispositions combine with environmental stressors to influence psychological disorders
Epigenetics and stress
Stress can lead to certain genes being turned on, resulting in a disorder
Comorbidity
Different combinations of genes can cause people to have more than one disorder
