Biomolecules and Organic compounds Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is an element
An element is any substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance( The smallest unit of an element is an atom )
What is a compound
any chemical that is made of two or more different elements( When two or more elements combine = compound )
What are the two main groups that compound can be classified into
inorganic / organic
What is an Organic Compound
Organic compounds contain carbon and hydrogen and are usually associated with living things. ( An organic Compound always includes Carbon joined/ bonded with itself or hydrogen)
What are other elements in Organic Compounds
Carbon and hydrogen are not the only elements that might be organic compounds
- Oxygen
- Sulfur
-Nitrogen
-Phosphorus
What are the 6 elements that most living things are made out of
C.H.O.N.P.S
C- carbon
H- hydrogen
O- oxygen
N- nitrogen
P- phosphorus
S- sulfur
What is an Inorganic Compound
Inorganic compound do not contain carbon
Ex: Water, Salt, and and acids like sulfric acids
What is the Importance of a carbon
All organic compounds contain carbon, but not every compound containing carbon is organic.
What is Carbon
Element of the periodic table
Is Carbon Dioxide organic why or why not
No Carbon dioxide is not organic because, since its carbon atom is not joined to other carbon atoms or hydrogen
What is an atom
Basic building block of all matter
What do Carbon Compounds in living things include
Fats, Proteins, Nucleic acids, and Carbohydrates
What is a Macromolecule
Macromolecule is a Polymer(many parts) made up of small monomers(one part) chained together
What is a Biomolecule
4 organic macromolecules(Large molecule) that carry out life proscess
What are the 4 Organic macromolecules in Biomolecules
1- Carbohydrates(Starch and sugar)
C.H.O
2- Lipids(Fats) C.H.O
3- Proteins(from meat) C.H.O.N.P
4- Nucleic acids(DNA) C.H.O.N.P
What is a monomer
Building block
What is an enzyme
proteins that speed up chemical reactions
(Carbohydrates ) Monomer, Enzyme
Monomer- Glucose
Enzyme- Amylase
(Proteins )Monomer, Enzyme
Monomer-Amino Acids
Enzyme- Pepsin
(Lipids )Monomer, Enzyme
Monomer- Fatty acids
Enzyme- lipase
(Nucleic acids )Monomer, Enzyme
What is Hydrogen
