Nervous System Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is the nervous system made up of?
Brain, Spinal Cord, and nerves
What is an Neuron?
Cell that carries nerve impulse information
What is the Purpose of the Dendrite?
Delivers impulses to the cell body
What is the purpose of the Cell Body?
Contains the nucleus and organelles
What the purpose of the Axon?
Carries electrical Impulses away from the cell body
What is the Function of the Myelin Sheath?
Insulates nerve fibers
In what order are the Cell Body, Myelin sheath, Axon, and Dendrite in (Give descriptions of what they look like)?
1- Dendrite: Branching tree lie extensions
2- Cell Body: The main body whats connected to the Dendrites
3- Axon: Long Drake that connects to the cell body
4- Myelin sheath: Fatty insulating layers wrapped around the Axon in segments
What is a Neurotransmitter?
Brain Chemical
What is Synapse?
When a , message reaches the end of a cell, neurotransmitter moves across the synapse of the Axon to the Dendrite of the next cell delivering a chemical message.
What is the function of the Nervous System?
-Receive and responds to information form inside and outside the body
-Regulates body function through stimulus and response
-Mainains homeostasis
What are the two parts of the Nervous system?
-Central nervous system( CNS )
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What does the Central Nervous System consist of ?
-Brain
-Spinal Cord
What is the Function of the CNS (Brain, and Spinal Cord )?
-Brain: Controls center of the body
-Spinal Cord: Links brain with body nerves, controls reflexes protected by vertebrae
What does the PNS consist of?
Includes all nerves branching CNS to body CNS and PNS work together to respond to stimuli in your surroundings through the five senses
What is Stimuli?
- Stimuli: Something that triggers a reaction to something else( Can be external or internal )
What are Five senses and how they function?
1-Vision: Light stimulates rods (dim light) and cones (colors ) and sends impulse to brain
2- Hearing: outer ear gathers sound waves that vibrate tiny bones and fluid which sends impulse to the brain
3- Smell and Taste: Molecules in air stimulates nerve cells in the nasal passages ( olfactory cells ) and on the tongue ( Taste buds )
4- Touch: Receptors found in organs and skin detects changes in pressure, pain, and temperature
Put theses in order form least to most complex( and explain why )?
-Neuron: The basic functional unit of the nervous system, a specialized cell responsible for transmitting electrical impulses.
-Nervous Tissue: A type of tissue that is made up of neurons and supporting cells, forming the structure of the nervous system.
-Spinal Cord: A long, cylindrical structure made up of nervous tissue, containing neurons that transmit signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
-Nervous System: The most complex, made up of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, responsible for coordinating the body’s responses to stimuli and maintaining homeostasis.
What is the function of the Left and Right Hemisphere?
-Left Hemisphere: Primarily responsible for language, logic, reasoning, and analytical tasks. It controls the right side of the body.
-Right Hemisphere: Handles creativity, spatial awareness, intuition, and visual tasks. It controls the left side of the body.
What are the parts of the Brain Stem?
1- Thalamus
2- Optic Nerve
3- Optic tract
4- Optic tract
5- Midbrain
6- Pons
7- Medula Oblangauta
8- Spinal Cord
What is the function of the Cerebellum
Carys out task such as walking writing. Also helps us stay balanced and upright
How would A damaged Cerebellum affect movement and fine motor skills.
It could cause weight gain due to lack of physical movement
What is the function of The Brain Stem
The brainstem functions as the control center for many vital involuntary bodily functions like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, swallowing, and consciousness, essentially acting as a bridge between the brain and spinal cord, relaying messages to regulate these automatic actions necessary for survival
What is the function of the Cerebrum
The largest part of the brain, the cerebrum initiates and coordinates movement and regulates temperature. Other areas of the cerebrum enable speech, judgment, thinking and reasoning, problem-solving, emotions and learning. Other functions relate to vision, hearing, touch and other senses
