(12 cards)
What are the 5 major functions of the skeletal system?
1- Shapes and supports body
2- Protects organs
3- Movement
4- (Blood cells are made in bone marrow) IMPORTANT
5- Stores calcium and Phosphorus
What is Periosteum?
Soft thin substance that covers and protects the bone
What is Compact Bone?

What is Spongy Bone?
Contains red marrow which makes red blood cells that carry oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the day
What is Marrow?

What is cartilage?
Rubbery tissue that cushions bones, located at joints that prevents your bones from rubbing together
What is a ligament?
Attaches bone to bone
What are the 5 types of joints?
1-Fixed Joint
2-Pivot joint
3- Ball and socket joint
4-Hinge joint
5-Sliding joint
What are the 5 type of joints functions?
1- Fixed Joints: Allows little movement: Ex joints of the bones in your skull (IMPORTANT)
2- Pivot Joint: Pivot joint one bone rotates around another bone: Ex
Turning your head; rotating your wrist (IMPORTANT)
3- Ball- and socket joint: The ball end one bone fits into a cup-like cavity on another bone: Ex shoulder or hip joint (IMPORTANT)
4- Hinge Joint: Back and forth: Ex Knee or elbow joint
5-Sliding Joint: One part of a bone slides over another bone: Ex Bones of wrist or ankle
