Integumentary Flashcards
(26 cards)
What does the Integumentary consist of?
- Skin
- Hair
- Nails
What are the main 5 functions of the Integumentary System, and what do they do?
1- Protection: Forms a protective covering over the body
A( Prevents infection and water loss )
2- Touch: Help us sense our environment
3- Formation of Vitamin D
4- Regulation of body temperature
A( Blood vessels in skin help release/ hold heat )
B(Perspiration or sweating to keep cool and shivering to keep warm)
5-Gets rid of waste
What is the largest organ of your body?
Your skin is the largest organ of your body and is made of layers of tissue
What is the Epidermis
The outer, thinnest layer
A(Outermost cells are dead and rub off )
B( New cells are constantly made at the base/bottom of the epidermis )
C( Cells produce melanin: Pigment that protects your skin and gives it color )
What is the Dermis
The middle layer
A( Contains blood vessels, nerve fiber, muscle oil, sweat glands, and other structures
What is the Fatty Layer
Covers and insulates the body, The fat layer of skin is located in the subcutaneous layer of tissue called the hypodermis
What is a follicle
A follicle is a small sac or pocket in the body that holds something important. It can mean different things in different parts of the body:
What is an Oil Gland
An oil gland is a small gland in your skin that produces oil (called sebum). This oil helps keep your skin and hair moisturized and prevents them from getting too dry. It also helps protect your skin from bacteria.
What is a Sweat Gland?
A sweat gland is a small gland in your skin that produces sweat (a watery fluid). Sweat helps cool your body down when you’re hot or exercising by evaporating from your skin. It also helps get rid of some waste products from your body.
Put these into order from most to least complex
1-Integumentary System
2- Fingernail
3-Epithelial Cell
4-Cuticle
1-Integumentary System – The entire system, including the skin, hair, nails, and glands, that protects the body.
2-Fingernail – A hard, protective covering on the tip of the fingers, made of keratin.
3-Cuticle – The tissue at the base of the nail, protecting the area where the nail grows.
4-Epithelial Cell – A single cell that forms part of the skin’s layers and other tissues.
What is the Muscle?
An organ that can relax and contract, which moves your body
What is voluntary and Involuntary movement( Give example )?
-Voluntary Movement: Movements that you control consciously, like walking, talking, or waving your hand.
(Bicep)
-Involuntary Movement: Movements that happen automatically without you thinking about them, like blinking, heartbeats, or breathing.
What are the 3 type of muscle tissues?
1- Skeletal Muscle
2- Smooth Muscle
3- Cardiac Muscle
What are the functions of the 3 types of muscle tissues>
1- Skeletal Muscle: Moves bones
A( Tendon connects muscle to bone)
B( Voluntary)
C( Contract quickly and tire more easily)
D( Looks striped or striated)
2- Smooth muscles: Found in digestive tract and blood vessels
A( Involuntary)
EX: Muscles in the stomach
3- Cardiac Muscle:
A( Found only in the heart)
B( Is striated)
C( Involuntary)
Muscles always_________?
-Pull
Muscles always move in _______?
-Pairs
Blood carries energy rich nutrients. to the muscles so they can work. What is the nutrients?
- Oxygen
What is Aerobic Exercise and what does it benefit?
Aerobic exercise is cardio, and it strengthens your cardiac muscle(Heart)
Aerobic- With Air
What is Anaerobic Exercise and what does it benefit?
Anaerobic Exercise Develops the size and strength of skeletal muscles
Ex: Weightlifting
Without Air
Put these into order form least to most complex organism- Skeletal Muscle, Striated Muscle, Muscular System, Bicep?
-Bicep – A specific muscle in the arm.
-Skeletal Muscle – A type of muscle attached to bones that allows voluntary movement (e.g., the bicep).
-Striated Muscle – A type of muscle that appears striped under a microscope, including skeletal and cardiac muscles.
-Muscular System – The system made up of all muscles in the body that work together to enable movement.
Why do we need to wear sunscreen?
To protect from harmful U.V rays. Also to protect from skin cancer, skin damage, and sunburn
Answer question with the right word that matches with the function( Part of the skin where blood vessels and nerves are found )
Dermis
Answer question with the right word that matches with the function( Layer of the skin that contains Keratin and Melanin )
Epidermis
Answer question with the right word that matches with the function( Protects skin form U.V radiation )
Melanin
