Characteristics of arterial bleeding?

-Comes from an artery
-Is bright red
-Gushes forth in jets or spurts synchronized with victims pulse

Characteristics of venous bleeding?

-Comes from a vein
-Is dark red
-Comes in steady flow

Characteristics of capillary bleeding?

-Comes from damaged capillaries
-Is bright red
-Oozes from the wound

What are the steps of treating a bleeding wound?

1. Bandage application
2. Pressure
3. Elevate injured area
4. Pressure points
5. Repeat as necessary
6. Tourniquet (last resort only)

What are the steps in applying a tourniquet?

1. Place 2-3 inches above wound
2. Wrap around limb twice and secure in place
3. Attach a note to victim with location of tourniquet and time it was applied
4. Do NOT loosen tourniquet
5. Continue to treat for shock and obtain medical attention
