Hematemesis

Vomiting blood or coffee ground material

Passage of maroon or bright red blood or blood clots per rectum

Upper GI bleed or Lower GI bleed (below the ligament of Treitz)

Etiology

-Anatomic (diverticulosis)

-Vascular (ischemic, radiation induced, angiodysplasia)

-Inflammatory (IBD, infectious)

-Neoplastic

Diagnosis via

Clinical exam, vital signs, orthostatics, endoscopy, CT scan, nuclear scan

Labs to run

CBC, Coagulation profile, chemistry, type and screen

Chemistry- used to check/screen for abnormalities from 1 or more organ systems;
tests for enzymes, drugs, minerals, hormones

Treatment

IV access, fluids, blood/blood products transfusion, procedures available to evaluate or stop the bleed
