Body orientation Flashcards
(37 cards)
which plane is split vertically down the middle of the body
(anatomical position)
median plan
which plane is split vertically down the body at any point
(parallel to the median plane)
saggital plane
which plane seperates the anterior and posterior of the body
coronal plane (or frontal plane)
which plane cuts the body horizontally
transverse plane (or axial plane)
which plane cuts the body at an angle
Oblique plane
what is the body position which to person is lying flat face down, on their front
prone
what is the body position which the person is lying flat, face up, on their back
supine
what is the body position whcih the individual is standing with their palms facing forward
anatomical position
what is the directional term for the front
anterior
what is the directional term for the back
posterior
what is the directional term for something furthur into the body
deep
what is the directional term for something furthur away from its origin
distal
eg. the hand is located at the distal end of the forearm
what is the directional term for a structure located closer to the sole of the foot
inferior
what is the directional term for a structure located forthur from the median plane
lateral
what is the directional term for a stucture located clsoer to the median plane
medial
what is the directional term for a part located closer to its origin
proximal
eg. the proximal end of the femur joins with the pelvic bone
what is the directional term for something located closer to the surface of the skin
superficial
what is the directional term for when something is located closer to the top of the skull
superior
What does bi-lateral mean?
Both sides
Example: kidneys
What does uni-lateral mean?
One side
Example: spleen
What does ipsilateral refer to?
Something occurring on the same side
Example: right thumb and right toe
What does contralateral mean?
Opposite sides
Example: right hand and left hand
What does the integumentary system consist of?
Skin, its appendages (hair, nails, sweat glands, etc.) & the subcutaneous tissue beneath it
The integumentary system is critical for protection and sensation.
What is the primary function of the skeletal system?
Protecting vital organs and providing structure
The skeletal system consists of bones and cartilage.
