What are body systems?
Groups of organs and tissues that work together to perform important jobs for the body.
Name three examples of body systems.
- Respiratory system
- Nervous system
- Digestive system
What is the anatomical position?
Upright position with palms of the hand facing forward.
What does the term ‘superior’ refer to?
Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body above.
E.g. of superior in relation to body parts.
The forehead is superior to the nose.
What does the term ‘inferior’ refer to?
Away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure of the body; below.
E.g. of inferior in relation to body parts.
The navel is inferior to the sternum.
What does the term ‘anterior’ refer to?
Toward the front of the body; in front.
E.g. of anterior in relation to body parts.
The sternum is anterior to the spine.
What does the term ‘posterior’ refer to?
Toward the backside of the body; behind.
E.g. of posterior in relation to body parts.
The heart is posterior to the sternum.
What does the term ‘medial’ refer to?
Toward the midline of the body; on the inner side of.
E.g. of medial in relation to body parts.
The heart is medial to the arm.
What does the term ‘lateral’ refer to?
Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of.
E.g. of lateral in relation to body parts.
The scapula is lateral to the sternum.
What does the term ‘proximal’ refer to?
Close to the origin of the body or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.
E.g. of proximal in relation to body parts.
The elbow is proximal to the wrist.
What does the term ‘distal’ refer to?
Further from the origin of a body part.
E.g. of distal in relation to body parts.
The knee is distal to the thigh.
What does the term ‘superficial’ refer to?
Toward or at the body surface.
E.g. of superficial in relation to body parts.
The skin is superficial to the skeleton.
What does the term ‘deep’ refer to?
Away from the body surface; more internal.
E.g. of deep in relation to body parts.
The lungs are deep to the rib cage.
What does ‘supine’ mean?
Face or palm up.
