What is resistance training training?
The use of resistance to muscular contraction to build the strength, anaerobic endurance and size of skeletal muscles. e.g.
What are contraindicated exercises?
Not recommended as it has the potential to be dangerous and cause serious injury.
Examples of contraindicated exercises
Movements that cause abnormal extension or flexion of a joint beyond its normal range, e.g. back arches or bridges
Movements that include excessive or rapid twisting around a fixed base, e.g. trunk twists
Movements that are sustained or held, e.g. held sit-up or straight leg raise
Movements that are constant and repetitive, e.g. wide or long arm circles
The plough - lying on back, legs over head, feet touching floor
Puts pressure on neck and spine, can cause injury
Hurdler’s stretch - one leg stretched forward, other bent behind body
Puts pressure on knees, can cause long-term joint problems
Deep knee bending
Twists the knee in unnatural way, damage ligaments
Full neck rotations
Strain neck muscles and pinch nerves
Straight leg toe-touching
Stretches lower back too much, harms spine and hamstring
