Statistical infrequency
A
- Number of times it is observed
- Any usual behaviour is normal
- Any different behaviour is abnormal

- Average IQ is 100
- 2% have IQ below 70
- Those 2% are abnormal & are diagnosed with IDD

L - Unusual characteristics can also be positive

- Useful in diagnosis (e.g. bottom 2% have IDD)
- Helps to assess range of conditions (e.g. BDI assesses depression, 5% score 30+)
- SI useful in diagnostic & assessment processes

- If few display characteristic, behaviour is SI but doesn’t mean we call them abnormal
- IQ above 130 as unusual as below 70, but not regarded as undesirable
- Althought SI can define abnormality, it can’t be sole basis
