  • Useful in diagnosis (e.g. bottom 2% have IDD)
  • Helps to assess range of conditions (e.g. BDI assesses depression, 5% score 30+)
  • SI useful in diagnostic & assessment processes

L - Unusual characteristics can also be positive

A
  • If few display characteristic, behaviour is SI but doesn’t mean we call them abnormal
  • IQ above 130 as unusual as below 70, but not regarded as undesirable
  • Althought SI can define abnormality, it can’t be sole basis
