Cardiovascular System Flashcards

(17 cards)

1
Q

What are the functions of blood?

A
  • transport gas, nutrients, hormones and waste
  • regulation of pH
  • restricting fluid loss
  • defence against toxins, pathogens
  • sustaining body temp

Q

Blood vessel direction?
(Hint: 🟦 🟥, arteries/veins)

A

🟥Arteries = efferent, carry blood AWAY from heart

🟦Veins = afferent, carry blood TOWARDS the heart

Q

Components of blood?

A
  • plasma proteins (i.e. globulins, albumins, fibrinogen)
  • ‘formed elements’ (i.e. red and white cells, platelets)

Separated blood in centrifuge?

A

(lightest to heaviest)

Q

Red blood cell production?

A
  • Happens in the red bone marrow of long bones (femur is the biggest)
  • develop from stem cells
  • stimulated by hypoxia (low oxygen triggers creation of more cells)
  • At the end of life of cell, iron gets recycled.

Q

What determines blood groups?

A
  • Surface antigens, and the potential mixture (i.e A has A, B has B, AB has both A and B, O has neither A nor B antigens.)

Q

Which arteries and veins are reversed?

A
  • Pulmonary arteries and veins.
(Pulmonary arteries carry blood TOWARDS the heart, instead of away from)
17
Q

What is the major function of red blood cells?

A
  • gas transportation
