1
Q
What are the components of the lymphatic system?
A
- Lymph nodes
- Spleen
- Bone marrow
- Thymus
- Lymph vessels
- Tonsils
2
Q
Functions of the lymphatic system?
A
- produce and maintain lymphocytes
- protect against infection and foreign substances
- return fluid to the bloodstream
- absorption of fats
3
Q
Location of the thymus?
A
- Upper chest.
Anterior to heart, but posterior to the sternum
4
Q
Location of the spleen?
A
- in the left quadrant of the abdomen, lateral to the pancreas posterior to the stomach
5
Q
What does the spleen do?
A
- Removes abnormal blood cells
- Storing iron from recycled blood cells
- initiating immune response
(vulnerable to rupture, soft organ)
6
Q
What are the two types of immune response?
A
- innate (I.e, barriers like skin)
- adaptive (i.e, T and B cells, attacking particular bacterium)
7
Q
What does bone marrow do?
A
- Production of different blood cells, and platelets
8
Q
What does the thymus gland do?
A
- Production of immune cells (lymphocytes)
9
Q
What do lymph nodes do?
A
- Filter substances that travel through lymphatic fluid
- Also contain lymphocytes to fight infection and disease
