Nervous System Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the two components of the Nervous System?
- Central (CNS)
- Peripheral (PNS)
What are the components of the CNS?
- Brain
- Spinal cord
What are the components of the PNS?
- Cranial and spinal nerves
How is the PNS divided into subcategories? (Hint: there’s two “-ic”)
- Autonomic
- Somatic
From the PNS, the subcategory of Autonomic has a further division. What are these two divisions?
- Parasympathetic
- Sympathetic
What is the PNS branch Autonomic nervous system responsible for?
- Involuntary behaviours like heart rate, breathing and digestion
From the Autonomic branch, what are the functions of the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic systems?
- Sympathetic activates ‘fight or flight’
- Parasympathetic relaxes the body to return to normal levels
What are the four brain lobes?
- Frontal
- Parietal
- Occipital
- Temporal
What are the Frontal, Parietal, Temporal and Occipital lobes in the brain responsible for?
- Frontal = Cognition, voluntary movement
- Parietal = sensory info, i.e. touch, smell
- Temporal = auditory, language, memory and emotions
- Occipital = vision and processing
What are the cranial nerves?
(Hint: there’s 12)
- Olfactory
- Optic
- Oculomotor
- Trochlear
- Trigeminal
- Abducens
- Facial
- Vestibulocochlear
- Glossopharyngeal
- Vagus
- Spinal accessory
- Hypoglossal.
What nerves are associated with eye movement? And vision?
- Oculomotor
- Trochlear
- Abducens
- Optic (vision)
What nerve is associated with smell?
- Olfactory
What nerves are associated with taste?
- Facial
- Glossopharyngeal
What nerve is associated with hearing?
- Vestibulocochlear
