Cardiovascular System Flashcards
(39 cards)
What is the circulatory system?
It can be thought of as the transportation of O2, CO2, H2O, nutrients and waste.
What is the main function?
To deliver O2, and glucose in the blood to the body cells and remove CO2 from body cells (metabolic wastes)
What is the heart?
It is used to pump blood throughout the body.
What is the heart made of?
Cardiac cells
What is the Myocardium?
Heart tissue
Why do we call the heart myogenic?
This is because the heart involuntarily responds to electricity currents and therefore is not controlled by the brain.
How many chambers does the heart have?
4
What is the Atria
Upper chambers (thin-walled)
What are ventricles?
Lower chambers (thicker walled)
What are the four chambers?
Right atrium
Right ventricle
Left atrium
Left ventricle
What does the right atrium and ventricle do?
Right-Atrium- Collects deoxygenated blood from body
Right ventricle-Pumps that blood to the lungs
What does the left atrium and ventricle do?
Left atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the lungs
Left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to rest of body.
What are valves?
Flaps of connective tissue between the atria and ventricles and arteries. They close to prevent backflow of blood as it moves through the heart via the veins
How many valves do we have?
We have four valves
What are they?
AV valve-Between atria and ventricles
Bicuspid- Left ventricle and left atrium
Tricuspid-Right ventricle and right atrium
Pulmonary valve-Located between right ventricle and pulmonary artery
What are arteries?
Blood vessel that carries blood away and contains thick walls
Veins???
Blood vessels which carry blood towards heart.
What are capillaries?
They are microscopic blood vessels which connect art. to veins together. Also where diffusion of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and waste happens. It is one cell layer thick.
What are the major blood vessels of the heart?
SVC + IVC (Superior-inferior vena cava)
PA (Pulmonary Artery
PV ( Pulmonary vein)
Aorta
What does SVC and IVC do?
They return deoxygenated blood to the right atrium
What does PA do
Pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from right ventricle to the lungs
What does PV do?
Pulmonary veins carry oxygen rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium
What does the Aorta do?
Delivers O2 rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
What is the overview of circulation of blood throughout the heart?
It send deoxygenated blood to the heart via SVC and IVC and send it to the lungs via PA and O2 rich blood then leaves the lungs and goes back to the heart via PV and then gets sent to the rest of the body via Aorta.
