Reproduction System Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is sperm?
It is the gamete of males that carries the father’s gene into the female egg to fertilize it.
What are the external and internal organs of males?
External System:
Testes
Scrotum
Penis
Internal System:
Epididymis
Vas deferens
Seminal vesicles
Prostate gland
Bulbourethral Glands
Urethra
What are Testis
It is a gland that produces sperm and testosterone which is located within the scrotum and it is triggered by FSH and LH.
What is the scrotum.
It is a sac that holds the testes and protects them. It also lowers the temp for optimal sperm production.
What is the penis?
Carries semen into female.
What is the bladder?
Stores urine before it is expelled from the body.
What are the glands in the male reproductive system?
Testes
Prostate Gland
Seminal Vesicles
Bulbourethral Glands
What do those glands do (except testes)
They produce nutrient rich fluid and enhance sperm mobility.
What is the Epididymis
Where sperm mature
What is Vas Deferens
Tube that carries sperm from testes to urethra.
What is a urethra
The tube within the penis that releases sperm.
What hormones associate with male reproductive system
Follicle stimulating hormone- Sperm production
Luteinizing hormone- Testosterone production
What is spermatogenesis
Creation of haploid sperms from spermatogoniumW
What is oogenesis.
Creation of a haploid ovum from oogonium
What are Ovaries?
It produces egg via mitosis and produces progesterone and estrogen. (triggered by FSH and LH)
What are fallopian tubes?
Leads egg from ovary to uterus and fertilization occurs there.
What is the uterus?
Thick muscular organ and is where the baby develops. W
What is the Cervix?
It is the opening of the uterus and it is dilated 10 cm for birthing baby and it connects vagina to uterus.
What is the vagina?
Where the female receives the sperm.
What is the menstrual cycle?
It is regulated by hormones and it is when no fertilization can happen.
What hormones are associated with the female reproductivity system?
Follicle stimulating- Triggers egg and estrogen
Luteinizing-Triggers ovulation
Estrogen- Secondary female characteristics
Progesterone-Thickens female lining.
What is an ovarian follicle
It is a fluid filled sac with ovary that contains an immature egg. It will rupture to release mature egg in ovulation
What is ovulation
A mature egg is released from the ovaries
How does LH trigger ovulation
A sudden spike of LH from the pituitary gland releases mature egg into fallopian tube for fertilization.
