Cell division Flashcards
(6 cards)
Where in the cell are the chromosomes found and what do they contain?
in the nucleus & they contain the genetic information/ DNA
What is mitosis and can you describe what happens during this process?
mitosis is the process of cell division
during mitosis the chromosomes make copies of themselves
before the cell divides it makes copies of sub-cellular structures such as ribosomes and mitochondria
the set of chromosomes are pulled apart and the nucleus divides
the cytoplasm and cell membrane divides once to form 2 genetically identical daughters cells
When does mitosis occur?
during growth,
How many pairs of chromosomes do body cells have?
23 pairs of chromosomes
How do gametes differ from body cells?
they only have half the number of chromosomes /a single set/only 23 single chromosomes
What happens to gametes during fertilisation?
new cells is formed
the chromosomes from each gamete pair up
this cell divides by mitosis to form a baby
