What is the difference between communicable and non-communicable diseases?
- Communicable disease eg TB and Flu are caused by pathogens that can be spread from one person to another.
- Non-communicable diseases cannot be transmitted from one person to another, eg heart disease and arthritis
How can different diseases interact?
- defects in the immune system mean the individual is more likely to suffer from infectious disease
- viruses living in cells can be trigger for cancer
- immune reactions caused by a pathogen can trigger allergies , eg skin rashes and asthma
What is a risk factor?
Aspects of a person’s lifestyle, or a substance in the environment that have been shown to be liked to an increased rate of disease.
What is a casual mechanism of disease?
A casual mechanism is a proven link between one factor influencing another.
Give three examples of a casual mechanism of disease.
- smoking and lung cancer
- alcohol and liver disease
- obesity on type 2 diabetes
What is cancer?
unregulated growth on abnormal cells
What are the two different types tumours?
1-Bening tumours stay in one place, do not invade others organs or tissues
2-Malignant tumours can spread around the body in the blood and lymphatic system and invade other organs
What are the risk factors of cancer?
Clear genetic risks;
- chemicals such as is asbestos
- cigarette smoke can cause tumours to form=carcinogens
- radiations: UV and x rays
